Associate Alumnae of Douglass College
Announces Unprecedented Campaign Success,
$41.8 Million Raised


The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College successfully completed The Campaign for Douglass, the most ambitious in Douglass’ nearly 100-year history, surpassing the Campaign’s $35 million goal by 20% for a total raised of more than $41.8 million, announces Campaign Co-Chairs Joyce Kovatch Albers-Schonberg ’65 and Alice B. Herman ’70. “Together we have significantly strengthened the resources needed to advance innovative education, women’s leadership for Douglass students today and well into the future. We are grateful to all who answered the call to ‘Make a Difference’.”

Thank you to all who have supported the Campaign and helped us surpass our goal. “From the AADC’s founding as an independent non-profit nearly 90 years ago through today, our sisterhood has shown how important relationships are to our organization and to connecting alumnae to each other, to the AADC and Douglass,” said Valerie Anderson ’81, AADC Executive Director. “We are heartened and honored by your steadfast involvement.  Our alumnae sisterhood is the driving force in serving as the key fundraising arm of Douglass and in fulfilling our mission to Douglass, her students and her alumnae.” 


Quality education, close-knit community, and innovative programs at Douglass — The “Douglass Difference” — is more important than ever for women graduating into a world of rapid communications and global change. The Campaign set out to assure that tomorrow’s women leaders have the strongest possible educational experience. The results position Douglass for new levels of success.
Some 76.8% of Campaign donors are alumnae, with the total number of donors being nearly 12,000.  62% of major gifts to the Campaign came from alumnae. Additional support came from friends of the AADC, and from community organizations, foundations and corporations. Every gift, from the smallest to the largest, added to the tremendous success.

The impact of the Campaign means that Douglass will continue its commitment to women’s education and be able to recruit the best and brightest by providing financial support for students to attend Douglass.

  • More students than ever will receive the financial assistance needed to achieve their degrees. Over $15 million (some 37%) of the total raised reflects alumnae and friends of Douglass’ support of students.
  • In partnership with the University, the amount needed to build a new Living-Learning Residence Hall for the Global Village was achieved. Construction will begin this year.
  • New endowments have been created to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.
  • The unrestricted endowment has increased with over $7 million in gifts to enhance innovative educational programs and leadership opportunities now and in the future.

Gifts at all levels from single-dollar to top-dollar combined to create an unprecedented achievement. Already, the impact of our success is evident. Over $900,000 in scholarship support was made available thru the AADC for the current year. Nearly 43% of the College’s program budget was provided this past fiscal year.


The Campaign for Douglass was a component of the Our Rutgers, Our Future Campaign which concluded on December 31, 2014. The AADC, with strong alumnae support, made Douglass proud with her part in that accomplishment. The participation of alumnae and friends helped Douglass shine; Mabel Smith Douglass would be pleased! Throughout the spring, you will be hearing more about the impact of both Campaigns in publications, social media and websites.

On behalf of the AADC and the entire Douglass Community, but most especially generations of future students, we are grateful to those who answered the call to participate generously in the Campaign. Douglass tomorrow will be stronger because of our success.

“Douglass today stands alone as the only all-female residential college at a flagship public research university in the nation,” wrote Douglass Dean Jacquelyn Litt in a recent op-ed. “Through its wide array of academic opportunities, Rutgers is perhaps the best place to spearhead this new model for higher education – a world-class research university that includes an institution focused entirely on the success and advancement of undergraduate women within its structure.”

“Because of generous alumnae and friends,” says AADC President Jeanne M. Fox ’75, “students are benefiting from gifts that enhance key programs and leadership opportunities such as gaining career experience through the AADC Extern Program, as a Peer Academic Leader, or meeting top women in government through the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN).”

Our Powerful Sisterhood!

“Our powerful sisterhood helped create a successful Campaign which provides benefits even beyond the impressive financial impact,” says Valerie Anderson. Through the Campaign, alumnae and friends gained a deeper understanding of today’s Douglass. Connections between alumnae increased through the creation of regional groups across the country, and other networking and program initiatives. Outreach through publications and exposure on social media were heightened. These are all part of the Campaign’s legacy and are now integrated into the AADC’s strategic plan, which should be completed this year. Alumnae are now looking forward with excitement to Douglass’ next milestone: the centennial celebration in 2018.
